in the freezing light of hoenn's new winter, jayden appears at the edge of petalburg's forest. with everything that had been going on since the meteor fell, it had been difficult to find the time for extraneous subjects like the gym challenge.

[break][break] but also, ever since the meteor, it was more imperative than ever to make sure that rocket was ready for whatever came their way. they had to be prepared to face the league, and part of that meant doing intelligence for SPECTRA.

[break][break] "hello" he calls out into the snowy forest, scarf wrapped around his neck. puffs of cold air echo in front of him as he awaits the gym leader DEREK HOFFMAN. "is anyone here?"

(G) AERODACTYL | PRESSURE - crunch, hyper beam, iron head, roar, sandstorm, stone edge

"Yah. Over here bud." Derek calls out, thankful that his challenger was punctual with their appearance. The cold grasp of winter has begun to make battling out in Petalburg Woods a bit of a drag. Naturally, he would do his best to get back inside where it was warm.

"Get out your pokemon and let's do this!"

Releasing his own, the duo of pokeballs released an EXCADRILL as well as his AERODACTYL, the latter being the one he called upon first.

"Let's kick it off with a 'storm." As rehearsed, the fossil pokemon causes a SANDSTORM to overtake the battlefield while the Excadrill waits patiently to figure out what kind of approach their opponents will take.

he appreciates DEREK HOFFMAN's directness as much as the gym leader probably appreciates his own forwardness.

[break][break] "sevastyan! zirnitra!"

[break][break] light explodes in front of him in the form of his alolan marowak and hydreigon. the latter lets out a cry as it's claws slam down onto the forest floor, just as the marowak disappears into the earth with DIG.

[break][break] a DRAGON PULSES through the air, cutting through the space towards the aerodactyl and excadrill.

The DRAGON PULSE forces the gym leader's pokemon back towards him, though it is evident they are still eager to fight.

"Wrong." Derek remarks as he observes the unfortunate circumstance the Marowak is put in by it's trainer. Eager eyes look over to his Excadrill, which has patiently waited it's turn. "Shake 'em up down there." Given the command, Derek's pokemon quickly delivers an EARTHQUAKE that rocks both the pokemon below and above.

Contrary to the obedience of that one, the gym leader's Aerodactyl moves in towards the opposing Hydreigon without being told, launching a powerful HYPER BEAM towards it. Given the SANDSTORM, it doesn't exactly have the clearest shot at it's target.

[break][break] the words break even through the cold air — but jayden doesn't need the reminder from DEREK HOFFMAN to know it. something dark flashes across his expression as his pokemon commits an error — his pokemon, because jayden had never given the command.

[break][break] but every opportunity could be a learning opportunity.

[break][break] even toys are useful, as long as they're not broken.

[break][break] as the EARTHQUAKE rocks the earth, the marowak was thrown out of the hole in the ground like a mole being thrown from it's home. pain swells in his body as the marowak is thrown into the sky, spinning against the bright-white winter backdrop, just as jayden's voice cuts through. dogmatic. absolute.

[break][break] his father's son.

[break][break] "retaliate!"

[break][break] twisting in the sky, his paws grasp against his bone and power swells in his arms before he swings down with finality, smashing into the space where the excadrill stands.

[break][break] with a roar, a ROCK SLIDE juts out of the earth, defending against the HYPER BEAM that is shot their way. the attack explodes against rock, giving the hydreigon just enough time to fly away.

The Marowak clawed it's way out from being buried like some unwanted DOLL, doing it's utmost to RETALIATE. Rearing back from the blow, Excadrill is able to catch a glimpse of the Aerodactyl's attack being disrupted by a ROCK SLIDE. Being out of the fight for the moment, there was only one of them that could make a move.

"After that dragon!" Derek doesn't enjoy that it is trying to flee, and neither does his pokemon. Though unlikely to make it's mark, the IRON HEAD is sure to intimidate.

it could be called escape, or re-strategizing. either way, the excadrill has also changed steps and is making it's way towards the hydreigon with startling speed. they have to move. now.

[break][break] jayden whistles sharp this time, a soundless command. his hydreigon beats it's wings powerful into the air as the excadrill comes for them, crying against the brunt of the attack. however, retaliation is made in turn in the form of an ASSURANCE beam that cuts through at close-range.

[break][break] "charge!"

[break][break] sevastyan's bone spins through the air as he lands onto the forest floor. bruises bloom from his own damage, but he is not willing to give up yet — and neither are they. power echoes in the air around the marowak in the form of bright light before a THUNDER cascades through the air towards the aerodactyl.

Lightning summoned forth meets it's mark, impaling the Aerodactyl and sending it down to the ground. Shit. Derek isn't sure how tough his pokemon was, but it seems to at least be able to lunge forward enough to attempt to CRUNCH down on the Marowak with it's powerful jaw.

It liked to act on it's own, which Derek didn't approve of. But it wasn't exactly the wrong move to make. He just didn't enjoy the idea that he was letting a fossil pokemon run wild during a gym challenge. But that's what happened when it got angry, and right now...

"Quit acting on your own, you idiot!" The gym leader barks at his pokemon, who foolishly lunged closer to their opponents when it was in no condition to fly. Whatever came next, it surely wouldn't be able to avoid.

"Excadrill, back them up." Going in on the offensive to occupy the Hydreigon, the beaver pokemon would unleash it's power in the form of a BRICK BREAK.

teeth snag through the electricity, CRUNCHING on bone. his marowak lets out a wail of pain as it stumbles backwards from the hit.

[break][break] "stand your ground!" jayden orders, his voice sharp and snapping like steel across the play field. his marowak winced with pain as he withheld the feeling of fangs against his skin, fingers gripping around his bone. with another glow of power, the SHADOW BONE twisted and attempted to crack upon the aerodactyl, or as close as it would allow.

[break][break] a crack splits along sevastyan's skull, threatening to split.

[break][break] violet eyes snap towards the excadrill as DEREK HOFFMAN makes his order, and jayden whistles sharp.

[break][break] hearing the wordless order, his hydreigon lets out a roar. the BRICK BREAK hits her in the face as her wings widen and her fangs glow with the power of an ICE FANG, attempting to bear down on her opponent.

Go figure. The Aerodactyl bit off more than it could chew, paying the price in the form of it's unconscious state. Derek didn't think much of the challenger due to how they started the match, but they seemed quick to pick up the pieces. To capitalize on their advantage, despite the hazardous nature of the battlefield.

A grunt of disdain escapes pressed lips, the gym leader withdrawing his pokemon with a red and white orb while commanding his Excadrill to continue with their offensive. "Earthquake, now!" The sudden shifting of the earth would make it hard for the Marowak to operate, let alone any damage it may endure.

Their Hydreigon, on the other hand, would be left unscathed by the attack. But the sandstorm had yet to dissipate, allowing them just enough time to cash in on it's dying breath.
